SAIP – Satellite and Digital Piracy at the Table of Intellectual Property and MBC Group

The Saudi Authority for Intellectual Property, in cooperation with the MBC Group, held a virtual workshop entitled “Piracy of satellite and digital broadcasting  with the participation of a number of representatives of the two sides.

This workshop is one of the results of the previous meeting that took place between the authority and the MBC group last month, where Mr. Sam Barnett, CEO of the MBC Group, said: The Saudi Authority for Intellectual Property has proven its full efforts to protect the intellectual property rights of its owners, and this is an ideal model that suggests global recognition. Because the partnership not only guarantees protection but also measures against piracy content and there is no doubt that the role of the authority has greatly contributed to the protection, promotion and enforcement of intellectual property rights in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

While the Executive Director of Respect for Intellectual Property, Mr. Yasser Al-Dabbasi, said that the importance of cooperation between the public and private sectors in order to reduce piracy will greatly contribute to strengthening the enforcement and protection of intellectual property rights by working to obtain a unified model against piracy. He also thanked MBC Group for its continuous cooperation.

During the workshop, the harms of broadcast piracy and how it affects the local and international levels were reviewed, and the Commission’s efforts to raise awareness of intellectual property and enforce its rights in the Kingdom were reviewed.

It is noteworthy that within the framework of the Kingdom’s efforts to protect intellectual property rights, the Saudi Authority for Intellectual Property blocked more than 300 violating websites and electronic applications during the year 2021 AD, and more than three and a half million materials violating intellectual property rights were seized in cooperation and coordination with partners through campaigns Inspections held by the authority in various regions of the Kingdom, as this comes from its tasks and competencies, which confirm the application of penalties against intellectual property violators.
