FIFA Intellectual Property Law has been officially issued in Qatar

Law No. 11 of 2021 on the Protection of Trademarks, Copyrights, and Related Rights of Fédération Internationale de Football Association (“FIFA”) was issued by the Emir on July 29, 2021, and it came into force on September 8, 2021. This Law has been issued to regulate the matters of FIFA’s intellectual property rights as the FIFA World Cup 2022 will be hosted in Qatar such as the registration of IP Rights mainly trademarks, related procedures, licensing and using the said rights, the competent authorities before which oppositions and appeals can be filed in addition to the legal period of such actions.

This Law has been issued to protect the FIFA’s intellectual property rights and to make it easier for the public to register and use their IP Rights. In that context and to encourage the public to register their rights, any government fees related to FIFA Intellectual Property applications have been canceled according to the instructions of the Intellectual Property Protection Office.

The provisions of Law No. 7 of 2002 on the Protection of Copyright and Related Rights, as well as Law No. 9 of 2002 on Trademarks, Commercial Data, Trade Names, Geographical Indications, and Industrial Designs, will apply to any subject matter not covered by the FIFA IP Law.
